I am a recent graduate of Cedarville University with degrees in music and political science. I enjoy teaching violin because it allows me to communicate the creative gift of music with others. I also enjoy interacting with a variety of unique individuals and learning styles.

I have experience teaching ages ranging from toddlers to retirees. I find that there are unique aspects to teaching and learning at any age, but that anyone can learn, whether or not they have had the opportunity of musical training in the past.

My teaching method uses the Mueller-Rusch method books for technique and the Suzuki books for repertoire. However, I am flexible to the needs of individual students and will often allow a transferring student to finish the book they were previously studying (such as Essential Elements, All for Strings, or Strictly Strings). I am especially concerned with teaching note-reading as well as proper technique from the moment students begin playing. As students advance, I strive to choose a repertoire that is tailored to their individual needs and that gives students experience playing a from a variety of different time periods in music, as well as the technical background needed to make playing this music well achievable.

I encourage students to attend classical concerts and to participate in my yearly recitals. Also, I am available to work on orchestral music with students in their lessons and to help them prepare for auditions.

At For a Song and a Story, I offer a summer-only lesson track on Saturdays that runs from May through August for those unable to take lessons during the entire year. I also teach regularly on Thursdays year-round from early afternoon through the evening.

As a performer, I played regularly in orchestras throughout high school and college, and am currently subbing occasionally in orchestras as well as playing in weddings and other venues. I believe that having good experience and “keeping fresh” with my own performances is very important to being able to be the relevant and high quality teacher that I strive to be.

Feel free to contact me by phone or email for more information. All the best as you consider violin lessons!

I am happy to announce that I have begun to offer viola lessons.

The viola is an instrument that is slightly bigger than the violin, but is played under the jaw with basically the same technique. It has the same strings of a cello (CGDA instead of violin GDAE), and it is a fifth below violin but an octave above cello. It also uses alto clef (a B in treble clef would be a D in bass clef and C in alto clef).

It is often an in-demand instrument in orchestras because of its relatively lower amount of players compared with the violin. The technique for violin and viola is virtually the same, but since I am still getting proficient with reading alto clef, I would like to offer a discount to my first five viola students (I already have one): I will charge 2/3 less than my usual rate, plus any sibling discounts that might apply. (If you are curious as to what that would be in your location, please let me know.) Please pass along the word to others who may be interested in viola lessons or let me know if any of your family members are considering this.
