Merry TubaChristmas
Sponsored by For A Song & A Story, plans are being made for the 6th annual Clinton County MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS, which will be held on Saturday, November 29th, 2008. In conjunction with last year's first annual "Wilmington's Hometown HoliDazzle", TubaChristmas was held at the Historic Murphy Theater in downtown Wilmington, Ohio. Tentative plans are for similar arrangements for this year.
This year we are excited to announce that Gary Tirey will be our new director for Clinton County's 2008 Merry TubaChristmas! Professor Gary Tirey is nationally recognized as the Director of Instrumental Music and tuba professor at Otterbein College where he has served for over 35 years. A native of Anna, Ohio, he is an alumnus of both Capital University and VanderCook College of Music. In 1990 Tirey was named an honorary alumnus of Otterbein. He is an active member of the Columbus Federation of Musicians, the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). Mr. Tirey has held several leadership positions in OMEA, and has served as regional student advisor to MENC. He is currently president of Phi Beta Mu, an honorary fraternity for band directors. In 1982, he was named by former Governor James Rhodes as chairman of "Merry TubaChristmas Columbus". An original member of the Brass Band of Columbus, Tirey also has performed with the Columbus Symphony and faculty brass quintets. Currently he is a member of the TubaShop Quartet, a professional tuba quartet which features Harvey Phillips.
Beginning Band Program
Instrumental band students from Wilmington Christian Academy combined with Home Schooled students in the Clinton County area have started a beginning band program. Practices are from 3:20pm to 4:20pm on Tuesday and Thursdays at the Wilmington Church Of The Nazarene. The band is under the direction of Paul Shivers.
There is a concert at the school on Thursday, May 29th @ 7:00pm.
FIRST NOTES!
First Notes is a beginning music class for children ages 4 through 6.
Taught by Amanda Wyatt, this nine session summer class is a unique opportunity for the very young child to get to know the piano. Music and piano playing basics will be presented in a colorful, child friendly manner with songs, games, movement and just plain having a good time. Concepts include how to navigate and play simple piano pieces, the musical alphabet, notes and rhythm. Not a musician yourself? Don't worry! An accompanying CD will help you and your child enjoy the music at home throughout the week. First Notes will be held one day a week on Mondays, June 16th through August 11th, from 11:00am to noon at For A Song & A Story at 201 E. Locust Street, Wilmington. The tuition is $90.00 for the nine weeks and may be divided into 3 payments of $30.00. There are also fees for "My First Piano Adventure" lesson and writing books. Arrangements may be made for family vacations.
If you have questions or would like to register, feel free to call Amanda at (859)760-9271 or For A Song & A Story at 937-382-8558.
